The Innovation Project™ 2013
Reinventing the Conversation about Innovation in Payments
Two Days. Five Modules. More than 100 of our industry’s elite innovators, large and small, have been hand-picked by us to lead a conversation about “what’s next in payments.” These delegates will share how they’re making it happen – and you can too (with 500 of the senior-most players in the space!). Business will get done. Contacts will be made. The future will be charted.
The Keynote Speakers and Conversation Starters
Well, we said we were going to take the conversation to another level — and we weren’t kidding. These eight rock stars each have a very different connection to payments and the innovation that is taking place. Their job: to challenge us all and stretch the convention wisdom about what and where and why to innovate.
The Oracle of Omaha (He will be doing a fireside chat via video with Business Wire CEO Cathy Baron-Tamraz)
President Clinton’s VP, author and Apple Board Member (He will be joining us live via satellite from London.)
The economist behind Freakonomics
entrepreneur and author of Lean Start Up
HBS Professor and author of The Architecture of Innovation
Treasurer of the United States who signs our currency
entrepreneur and pre-paid pioneer
Deputy Director of the CFPB (their #2 guy)
We’ve divided our agenda into five modules:
MODULE ONE: CEO Roundtables
90-minute interactive sessions that will challenge the conventional notion about how innovation in payments is discovered, ignited and monetized.
MODULE TWO: The 2013 PYMNTS ThinkAThon™
Think you can you solve some of the payments industry’s toughest problems in 120 minutes? Then join one of 15 teams of IP-2013 delegates who will compete to devise the best solution for five critical payments conundrums that cut across the payments ecosystem.
Here’s how this works. All delegates are assigned to a team (you can tell us which problem you’d like to solve after you register). Team captains will convene their teams on the afternoon of day one. The morning of day two is the day of reckoning when each ThinkAThon team captain will present their team’s solutions in rapid-fire to a very picky panel of judges. Then, it’s up to them to decide who goes home with the title of Master Payments Guru 2013. Click here for topics and exclusive details on this one-of-a-kind experience!
|Tim Attinger, Head of Strategy at Blackhawk||Beverly Anderson, EVP Consumer Financial Services, Wells Fargo||Bryan Johnson, Founder of Braintree||Scott Thompson, CEO Shoprunner||Richard Schmalensee, Former Dean , MIT Sloan School||Brian Smith, Former General Counsel, MasterCard|
MODULE THREE: The Innovator Expo
Forty of the most happening but mainly under-the-radar startups will reveal what they’re doing to change the course of commerce and compete for the title of “Best in Show” and a cash grant from PYMNTS.com.
Gone are the elaborate booths, gimmicky freebies, aggressive sales reps and cliché tag-lines. Each innovator will receive exactly the same set-up: a booth outfitted with a gigantic flat-screen monitor, connections for a laptop, and a dedicated spot atop our product launch pad – all spread through Harvard’s Science Center. The result is a level playing field regardless of the innovator’s level of funding where, ultimately, it will be the ideas that are measured, not the fit and finish of a company’s marketing materials.
Some of the companies you’ll see are:
MODULE FOUR: IP-2013 Payments Innovation Showcases
A select group of innovators from new and established companies will create customized demo centers and storefronts that give delegates the chance to “kick the tires” on the innovations they have and will to take to market. It’s your chance to actually experience the innovations that you’ve read about but haven’t had the chance to try.
MODULE FIVE: Innovation Awards and Payments Hall of Fame
The grand finale of IP-2013 will be the PYMNTS Prizes, where, during a gala Golden Globes-style dinner, we bestow the most prestigious honors in payments to a select group of winners.
| The 2013 PYMNTS Innovation Awards | From hundreds of submissions, our panel of judges — and you! — will select winners for each of the 15 Innovation Award prize categories including, the coveted “Most Innovative Payments Player,” won in 2012 by Kabbage.
And Just when you thought that the Innovation Project was star-studded enough… enter B.J. Novak. Yes, who better to host a ceremony at Harvard University’s exquisite Annenberg Hall than a Harvard grad himself? It’s true – B.J. Novak, co-producer and actor of The Office fame, will serve as our emcee for the evening.
| The 2013 Payments Hall of Fame | We’re launching and will induct our first three honorees into the Payments Hall of Fame for their achievements in 2013.
| The PYMNTS Lifetime Achievement Award | And finally, we will award the PYMNTS Lifetime Achievement Award to the individual who has made the greatest contribution to payments over their lifetimes.
| Best Innovation via ACH Award | NACHA – The Electronic Payments Association will recognize the payments player who has demonstrated excellence in innovation leveraging the ACH Network in this first-ever award.
The celebration continues at the 2013 Crystal Ball, after all of the awards have been presented. More beer bash than ball, we’ll all kick back and celebrate all of our achievements in the historic Queen’s Head Pub. Take a tour below!

So, are you IN?
While there are clearly tons of conferences with the perfunctory panels and high profile keynotes, there isnt anything quite like the Innovation Project. We’ve assembled the industry’s most senior players to take the conversation about innovation in commerce to an entirely different level – one that creates a mechanism for engaging internal and external thought leaders to shape the future of innovation throughout the year. Many are describing The Innovation Project as a “Davos-like” experience tailored to the topic of innovation in commerce – creating, sharing, and celebrating innovation with our sector’s most elite innovators.
So, come on IN. We hope to see you at The Innovation Project and to have you help us all rethink the future of commerce, in real time.
